The Conscious Bedroom - Hotel Bedroom Concept

Independent Hotel Show 2019, Olympia London

Harris & Harris were approached by the Independent Hotel Show team early 2019 to become their design partner for the design of an environmentally and socially conscious hotel bedroom suite concept, to be built in time for the Olympia based show in October.

The studio felt it was crucial that sustainability was considered across every millimetre of the room; not only the architectural finishes, furniture and decorative items but also areas which may usually be overlooked such as the artwork, bedding and even the floor underlay. The space would give Harris & Harris the opportunity to showcase this mentality through the design and curation of brand partners who have similar ethics.

In parallel to curating these sustainable focussed products and brands, Harris & Harris ensured the overall design felt fresh, inviting and luxurious, all of which could be achieved whilst minimising the impact on the environment.

Artiq - the art consultancy worked with Harris & Harris to curate a selection of artists to provide low-impact pieces that use natural and recycled materials

Axminster - provided the sumptuous 100% pure new wool carpet from British sheep with a natural jute backing and their Axfelt underlay made from 100% recycled ingredients including car tyres and old carpets

Brushbox - supplied their wonderful FSC certified and biodegradable Bamboo toothbrushes

Cole & Son - provided their beautiful British made 100% linen fabrics and FSC certified and durable paper based wallpaper

Crosswater - worked with Harris & Harris to supply their gorgeous mixer taps, basins, shower and toilet, which were all selected for their low water use and high quality construction

Curran Packaging - provided their recycled and easily recyclable cardboard tubing for the bespoke bed headboard, bedside tables, TV & plant wall and mini bar

Domus - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their fabulous 100% natural and handmade terracotta bathroom tiles and FSC certified European Oak flooring

Edward Bulmer - provided their gorgeous paint made only with natural occurring raw materials and containing no dangerous chemicals to produce the lowest VOC level possible

The Fine Cotton Company - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their luxurious natural and fully organic bed linens, cotton bathrobes and towel set

L'Occitane En Provence - provided their uplifting and relaxing room fragrance, hand wash, hand lotion, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner all of which contain ethical and sustainably sourced ingredients within 100% recycled plastic containers

Naturalmat - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their wonderful and class leading British made, natural and certified organic bed, mattress, duvet and pillows

Plantplan - provided their ferns and trailing plants for well being within the room, improved oxygen levels and cleaner air with no flowering to ensure low-allergens

Quooker - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their very clever all-in-one tap for boiling, filtered, hot & cold water at the bespoke mini bar. This omitted the need for a kettle, allowing the exact amount of water required to be used as well as omitting the need for single use water bottles within the bar fridge

Samsung - provided their A class energy level QLED 4K television on a swivel bracket to allow viewing from the living area or bed

Simplehuman - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their superb recycling bins to encourage hotel guests to recycle their own waste

Smile Plastics - provided their stunning 100% recycled waste plastic sheet for the bespoke TV & plant wall, mini bar and bathroom joinery. Made from mixed waste packaging and chopping boards

Tala - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their brilliant 'filament looking' low energy LED bulbs with A++ energy rating. Tala also support reforestation projects around the world

Turnstyle Designs - provided their gorgeous British made and high quality door levers featuring vegetable tanned leather. Turnstyle Designs also contribute to the organisation '1% For The Planet'

Wandsworth Electrical - worked with Harris & Harris to provide their luxurious British made and high quality brass light switches, with dimming function and switched sockets
